Brother Abdelbari:
A’sslamu Alykum’
We ask Allah SWT that this reaches you and all the brothers in the best of Eman.

Brother I would like to thank you for remembering us in this Ramadan with your cards. It means very much to us. You asked many questions relating to our status here and I will respond to some of them and will respond to the rest in the future Enshallah.

Don’t be discouraged if some brothers do not respond there are many reasons for that so please excuse us and don’t let it deter you from contacting us, as it means very much to us that we hear from our brothers and sisters outside.

I did see similar cards like the unique one you sent me in the hands of many other brothers during mail call the same day I received mine so that indicates that many brothers received your cards even though I did not ask them.

Brother our situation here is great during this Ramadan. We are blessed by Allah SWT the one whose Grants are uncountable. As to the brothers you specifically mentioned and our day to day life I’ll mention some of that.

We had a new addition which many in the outside world know. Shaykh Ahmad Musa Jibril is now with us in the CMU. Prior to his arrival we had many internal problems. Muslims with each other, Muslims with non-Muslims and Muslims with staff.

The problems among the Muslims themselves stem from the diversity of the brothers here; we have modernists, we have nationalists who fought with the PLO in the 80′s, we have Salafis, we have Ikhwan, we have very young brothers….etc

As soon as this blessed Shaykh arrived we all saw in his apparent taqwa (and ALLAH SWT knows what’s in the hearts), vast amount of knowledge, charisma and personality; a man who would change our situation.

The Muslims here for the first time since the CMU opened and I was among the first to come to this unit when it opened all agreed by consensus for the first time that he should be our Amir days after he arrived. Every time we had an Amir election it was with problems, this time it was by 100% enthusiastic hope of change that Shaykh Ahmad should take the Emirah.

He refused but it was imposed upon him by us.

Everyone here is very unique Islamically. Everyone has a special characteristics but this brother is truly amazing. He is graduate of al-Madina so his knowledge in Islam is shore-less. He memorizes the Koran and most of the books of Hadith (many which I heard he memorized in his years in solitary), his khutab make every last one of us cry every Jummah. This is the third Jummah of Ramadan and every last one of us left every jummah of Ramadan in tears.

He is also a graduate of Law from Michigan so he knows how to deal with the staff and their intrusions upon our rights!! I’m not sure if it’s respect or fear (I lean more to the latter) but he is running this unit by the blessing of Allah SWT.

It may also be that for the first time we are all unified behind him and his decision making.

We now have halaqat he is teaching us on a daily basis; a class in Fikh, another in Hadith, another in Seerah, another Aqeedah, another in Tajweed and a Koran class. He started a systematic in depth study and when these are finished there is additional topics he plans to start on. The purpose is to leave each of us with an amount of knowledge as if we graduated from Medina. This is done on daily basis seven days a week.

We take in depth organized notes, memorize and review. With these classes he teaches us we have no time to do anything but study. This may be a reason why many of the brothers do not have time to respond. We are taking advantage of this great Imam before we loose him.

We were deprived of having any gatherings like this but by the blessings of Allah SWT we now hold them in public. This is the first Ramadan ever where we place our carpets out in the prayer area at Asr and sit in his halaka until Taraweeh prayer breaking for Salah and Iftar.

Shaykh Jibril and those of us who also have Koran classes barely ever sleep. There is several of us -Alhamdulilah – who in addition to attending those daily classes with Shaykh Ahmad also memorize 4-6 pages of Koran daily with him so he can give us his Ijaza before he leaves. Some who memorize a bit less than that.

In addition to teaching, the Muslims, non-Muslims and staff by Allah have agreed to let him resolve all internal disputes that arise among inmates or inmates and staff. We call his cell #24 Dar-ul-Khilafah. “smile”
By Allah he has gotten acceptance in the hearts of Muslims, non-Muslims and staff like I never seen before.

By Allah, By Allah, by Allah, I can say about him what Ibn ElQayyim said about his Skahykh Ibn Taimieh. ‘
When we feel down we go to Ibn Taymieh and it’s merely moments or a few words we hear that boost and re-ignite our Iman to levels we never thought possible.‘ That is Shaykh Ahmad to us with not an ounce of exageration.

We anticipate going to Jummah by the minute to hear those Iman boosting words that ignite and revive hope and Iman to each and every one of us. His Jummah to us is a dosage of faith and in between Jummas is his halaqat and advice to those facing difficulties are a true blessing from Allah SWT.

In his early Jummah’s when he arrived he quoted from Ibn Taymieh’s life in prison in how he deterred other inmates from wasting time and committing sins such as playing Chess and other matters to becoming students of Elm. It’s quite unique because just as Ibn Taymieh -rahimahu allah- had issues with sins and Chess in particular we had those similar problems.

Shaykh Ahmad did here what Imam Ibn Taymieh did in the prisons of Syria centuries ago cleaning this unit of apparent sins and changing it into a stronghold of learning and teaching, growing of beards and implementing the Sunnah to best of our ability.

Please make dua’a this continue brother as we really fear they will end this one way or another.

Basically my brother his knowledge, generosity, leadership abilities, and taqwa (and only Allah SWT knows whats in the hearts) are amazing and I can write page after page on him. I might expand upon that if we remain in touch inshallah.

As to the second brother you asked about brother Yahya (John Lindh Walker) he is another amazing brother. A true student. We never used to see that brother unless it was to go down to eat in the dinning hall, during Jummah or rare circumstances because he stays to himself in his cell reviewing Koran, reading Hadith, and gaining more Islamic Knowledge. He has also been taking regular correspondence classes that occupy his entire time and he is not very social due to his love of reading and studying, he has not a minute to waste nor a vain word to utter – may Allah SWT bless him.

Again, after Shaykh Ahmad Jibreel’s arrival he has began to join our halaqat and is very social with Shaykh Ahmad. Actually he has been here approximately 4 years -a year after me- and I have never seen him interact
with anyone as he interacts with the Shaykh.

He attends both bro Jibreel’s general classes and because Jibreel loves him more than us “smile” he gets special classes – we are jealous Shaykh Ahamad’s love for him. (smile) Brother Yahaya is upbeat and very strong. We get some of the articles written about him, but he cares less. When I see those two brothers in particular I really see as if I’m looking at salaf of previous times living in this age.

There is more I wanted to tell you about this brother in particular and the rest of the brothers you asked about, however it is getting very late and I need to return to reviewing Koran.

Please continue to respond to me and I will give you more on our situation.
May Allah SWT reward you for your concern over us.

*I have no problem with you publishing any of our correspondence but I do prefer that my name not be mentioned.
